An Evening at Shelland

Last Wednesday we hosted 60 florists and designers for the CT Floral Group at our facility here in Milford.

It was a perfect golden hour as we strolled through Shelland Flower Farm learning about all the varieties of flowers grown at the farm. The fields were bursting with colorful zinnias, celosia, gomphrena, Japanese anemone, hibiscus foliage, winter berries, hydrangea - and the star of the show - some 5,000 dahlia plants. As the sun was setting, Kate Russell, the creator of Shelland Flower Farm, gave us a full tour of the farm, which was followed by a talk on dahlia propagation. We learned how she breeds dahlias and comes up with new varieties each year.

Justin Ramsey, owner of Floral Designs by Justine, followed up with a discussion and design session on the principals of Ikebana. We learned bout the Shin ("Heaven"), the Soe ("Man") and the Tai ("Earth") in design. She made a fabulous centerpiece and a wedding bouquet, using flowers she picked from the farm earlier that day.

It was a fun evening filled with education, connection and inspiration and it was great to see so many of out customers attend.
